Mythbuntu

Mythbuntu is a Linux distro based on Ubuntu, specializing in making an easy-to-run MythTV system. Other options out there for this type of a MythTV setup are MythDora, Knoppmyth, etc. Google will help you find many more :)

On this page I will outline the method in which I use to setup my Mythbuntu system. I will try to break down the setup into different pages that will focus on one section at a time.

First, the overview of my setup. I plan on having a segregated system, rather than an all-in-one box. This is for a couple reasons, but mainly because of spare hardware that I have available etc. I will have a server, a network-based tuner, and a frontend thin-client.

Capture Card

In the past I've played with a handful of different tuner card options, namely a pcHDTV, WinTV-150, WinTV-350, and then finally a Plextor PX-TV402U. Every time, while I was able to get them working for the most part, I always had some kind of problem with something (sometimes driver related, sometimes hardware related, sometimes both). This time I have decided to go with an HDHomeRun dual tuner. It gives me the ease of the tuner being an external device (which makes the backend machine setup much easier) while at the same time the benefits of an HD tuner card, native MythTV support, AND two tuners in one! I was even able to pickup a refurbished one for cheap, though now I kick myself because they are on sale at Newegg.com new for the same I paid for my refurbished... go figure!
